Die Vorreiter des Thrash ähneln einer Bruderschaft aus einem der Romane Lovecrafts. Sie sind die alten Götter, die einst alles in Bewegung setzten und für Generationen aus Nachahmern immer noch der unangefochtene Herr im Haus sind. TESTAMENT stehen stolz inmitten von Pionieren wie „The Big 4“ und auch Größeren.
Seit über drei Jahrzehnte liefert das Bay Area-Quintett — Chuck Billy [Gesang], Eric Peterson (Gitarre), Alex Skolnick (Gitarre), Steve DiGiorgio (Bass), und Gene Hoglan (Schlagzeug) — nun regelmäßig unverfälschten, ungezügelten und unverwüstlichen Metal in seiner reinsten Form ab. Dabei sind keine Spur von Kompromissen oder irgendwelchen Anzeichen dafür, es irgendwann einmal ruhiger angehen zu wollen, zu erkennen.
Im Verlauf ihrer bahnbrechenden Veröffentlichungen von „The Legacy“ und „Practice What You Preach“ hin zu „The Gathering“ und „The Formation Of Damnation“, das als „Bestes Album“ im Rahme der Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2008 gekürt worden war, verkaufte die Band mehr als 14 Millionen Platten weltweit, von denen zwei Millionen alleine in den U.S.A. abgesetzt wurden.
Das zuletzt 2012 erschienene und von Kritikern gelobte „Dark Roots Of Earth“ erreichte mit über 20.000 Verkäufen in der ersten Woche die #12 in den Billboard Top 200 Charts, was zum bisher erfolgreichsten Chart-Einstieg der Band führte. 2016 melden sich TESTAMENT mit „Brotherhood Of The Snake“ zurück, das als ihr wohl wildestes und bissigstes Album aller Zeiten bezeichnet werden darf.
“The first record is always classic because you form the band, you’re totally into it, you go through the club scene, find yourself, and write your initial album over multiple years,” erklärt Eric. “Then, you get signed and end up in a cycle. We took some time to do „Brotherhood of the Snake“, and it shows. Different influences came in. Normally, there are a few straight ahead thrash songs. We haven’t had this many thrash tracks since „The Legacy“. It’s a new era.”
“I view TESTAMENT like I did when we started,” fügt Chuck hinzu. “I’ve been fortunate to be doing this for over 30 years. It means a lot. We’re just going to continue doing what we do.”
Nach einem langen Tour-Sturm um „Dark Roots Of Earth“ zu promoten, fingen die Jungs am Ende des Jahres 2013 wieder mit dem individuellen Songwriting statt. Inmitten eines strengen Tour-Zeitplans setzte sich ganz allmählich und organisch neue Musik zusammen. Im Frühling 2016 gingen TESTAMENT dann zusammen mit Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Exodus) in Studio, in dem recht schnell die zehn Songs des Albums fertig gestellt wurden.
“Having separate periods to write set it apart,” erklärt Eric weiter. “Everybody played hard. Chuck really surprised me and belted out stuff that’s more melodic over the heavy speed metal riffs. It blended really well together.”
“It does flow,” bestätigt Chuck. “There’s a lot of musicianship going on there, and I was finding hooks in the moment. I was able to feel it and just go.”
Das Album beginnt mit der tödlichen Note des Titeltracks, ‚Brotherhood Of The Snake‘. Ein peitschendes, treibendes Riff katapultiert Chucks unverwechselbaren Growl nach vorne bevor die sinnesbetäubende Lead-Gitarre einsetzt. Ein brutaler und halsbrecherischer Basher gepaart mit dem, was die Band am besten kann.
“It was actually one of the first songs we put together,” berichtet der Sänger. “Once we heard it mixed, we were all like, ‘Wow, we have the direction we’re going in. It’s really heavy.’”
An anderen Stelle galoppiert ‘The Pale King’ auf einem apokalyptischen Trommelfeuer aus Schlagzeug und Gitarren davon, nur um kurz danach in unerschütterlichem Gesang zu gipfeln.
“It was really natural,” lächelt Eric. “It has that old school vibe, but this new energy to it. It never lets up. I love that!”
„Brotherhood Of The Snake“ endet mit dem vernichtenden und beinah kinoreifen Song ‘The Number Game’, der Chucks Geschick für blühende lyrische Geschichten beweist.
“I actually wrote it with Steve ‘Zetro’ Souza,” erinnert er sich. “I had that chorus, and it was one of those things where it had to be repeated. It’s 14 days and 14 nights where this guy’s on a killing spree. He does a countdown, and your life is based on the number you are. It was trip.”
Ein faszinierendes Konzept zieht sich durch „Brotherhood Of The Snake“, das in vielen Schlüsselstellen und dem mythischen Wettrennen, von dem das Album seinen Namen hat, erkennbar ist.
“There’s a connection between the alien world and religion, and the whole storyline came from it,” erklärt Chuck. “There’s a story of a Sumerian race 6,000 years ago that went on crusades to basically dethrone religions. The earth was basically the place where their leader, the pale king, set people to be imprisoned and mine for gold. It got the ball rolling.”
Letztendlich bleibt die Bruderschaft so stark wie gehabt.“If a TESTAMENT fan knows our history or has followed our last couple of records, they’ll hear the progression,” klärt der Frontman auf. “Everything is right there and in-your-face. That’s the way it should be with us.”
