ASH BORER (US) / VANUM (US) - "European Tour MMXVII"
Ash Borer is a black metal band formed in Western America in 2008. Over the course of multiple studio albums, EPs, demos, and split releases, as well as an infamously decimating live presence, Ash Borer has created a unique sound and aura that can only be called their own; employing elements of psychedelia, dark ambient, funeral doom and noise, while filtering it through their own take on ferocious black metal.
The band’s eponymous debut full length, was recorded direct to tape in 2010 with Andrew Oswald in a warehouse in Oakland, CA. Initially self-released by the band’s Psychic Violence Records imprint, Ash Borer took the underground by storm, leading to deluxe vinyl pressings through Pesanta Urfolk as well as what would become a continuous relationship with Profound Lore Records.
The following release, Cold of Ages, their first with Profound Lore, saw the band push their sound into darker and more intricate territory, further defining their sound and solidifying their place at the forefront of American extreme music. Like their debut, it was quickly heralded as a modern classic of American black metal. Quickly after Cold of Ages, the band released an accompanying 12” EP entitled Bloodlands, through Gilead Media and Psychic Violence Records. Recorded live in a small studio in Oakland, the EP featured raw recording fidelity somewhat akin to their debut, with the expanded sonic palette of Cold of Ages.
More than a refined studio act, Ash Borer has likewise proven themselves as a commanding live entity, having toured the US extensively as well as a previous 2013 European headlining tour with Fell Voices. Noteworthy festival appearances for Ash Borer include 2013’s Roadburn, both 2012 and 2013 Stella Natura festivals (US), 2011 and 2012’s Gilead Media Music Festivals (US).
After a 3 year break from recording while members focused on other musical endeavors (Predatory Light, Vanum, Triumvir Foul/Vrasubatlat, etc), Ash Borer will return in late 2016 with their latest full length, The Irrepassable Gate, to be released by Profound Lore Records on CD/DLP/Digital formats. Produced by Randall Dunn in the Spring of 2016, the album features 6 tracks of the dark, mercurial sound that the name Ash Borer has become synonymous with. A stygian wall of sonic terror, The Irrepassable Gate is the darkest and heaviest material the band has released to date.
Ash Borer will play select domestic US dates in late 2016, and are currently organizing a European tour for the Spring of 2017.

Vanum was formed in 2014 as the collaborative project of K. Morgan (Ash Borer/Predatory Light) and M. Rekevics (Fell Voices/Vorde/Vilkacis). Drawing more from old traditions than either member's other projects, Vanum play elemental and majestic black metal with an unyielding force and passion. Rather than simply combining the oppressive drone of Fell Voices with the harrowing desolation of Ash Borer, Vanum showcases a more sharply focused and dynamic sense of composition and arrangement. Through a deep understanding of their craft as well as an attention to detail resulting from years of dissecting the black metal genre, Vanum is one of the genre’s more striking new acts.
Foregoing the demo process, Vanum issued their debut album Realm of Sacrifice on Profound Lore and Psychic Violence in late 2015. The band rounded out 2015 playing a series of exclusive shows across the US, proving their ability to capture all of the nuance and expanse of their recordings in the live setting. The upcoming 2017 European tour with Ash Borer marks Vanum’s first large scale tour.
