Er ist bekannt als Fotograf des Neuen Bauens: Während Wilhelm Riphahn und andere Architekten Konrad Adenauers Siedlungspolitik für ein modernes Köln umsetzten, erhielt Werner Mantz (1901–1983) den Auftrag, ihre Gebäude zu fotografieren. In ihrer schwarzweißen Strenge wirken die menschenleeren Gebäude, Räume und Straßenzüge in seinen Aufnahmen monumental. Diese Bilder sind es, die Kölns architektonische Moderne über die Stadtgrenzen hinaus bekannt machten.
Das Münchner Künstlerkollektiv Konvolut lichtet mit seinen musikalischen Lesungen urbane Lebenswelten ab. Heute Abend lernen wir mit Cloaca Mundi das neueste Projekt des Trios kennen. In dem preisgekrönten Roman meißelt der Münchner Schriftsteller und Musiker das Grabdenkmal einer verlorenen Landschaft in Worte: Der düster-groteske „Country noir“ erzählt vom Leben hinter bleiernen Kittelschürzen, vor der Ankunft der Gegenwart und unter der grauen Himmelsglocke der Eifel. Mehr aber noch erzählt er vom Sterben, zwischen nüchternem Ableben und all dem, was der, der zurückbleibt, darin zu lesen trachtet. Ein Text nicht in schwarz-weiß, aber in vielen Graustufen.

He is known as a photographer of the Neues Bauen movement of modernist architecture in Germany: while Wilhelm Riphahn and other architects carried out Konrad Adenauer’s housing policy as part of the modernization of Cologne, Werner Mantz (1901–1983) was commissioned to photograph their buildings. In their black-and-white austerity, the deserted buildings, rooms, and streets in his pictures seem monumental. It was these pictures that made Cologne’s modernist architecture renowned beyond the boundaries of the city.
The Munich artist collective Konvolut illuminates urban life with its musical readings. On this night, along with Cloaca Mundi, we will learn about the trio’s latest project. In an award-winning novel, the Munich-based author and musician carves a literary memorial to a lost landscape: this dark and grotesque “country noir” recounts life behind leaden apron dresses, before the arrival of the present and under the gray skies of the Eifel. But even more, it tells of dying, between a sober passing and everything that those who are left behind seek to read into it. A text not in black and white, but in many shades of gray.
