Er ist einer der originellsten Abstrakten des 20. Jahrhunderts: In einer großen Retrospektive zeigt das Museum Ludwig das Werk des Bildhauers und Malers Otto Freundlich (1878–1943).
In "Otto Freundlich. Kosmischer Kommunismus" lässt sich das Schaffen eines Mannes nachvollziehen, der beharrlich seinen eigenen Weg ging. In Mosaiken und Glasmalereien schloss er an eine kollektive Kunst der Vergangenheit an und holte zu einer der Zukunft aus. Zu einer Zeit als ihm – anlässlich seines 60. Geburtstages 1938 – alles, was in der Kunst Rang und Namen hatte, Respekt zollte, denunzierten ihn die Nazis in der Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst".
Viele seiner Werke wurden zerstört. Umso beeindruckender sind die Skulpturen und Mosaike, die leuchtenden Gemälde und Gouachen, die die Ausstellung versammelt. Hier lässt sich die Strahlkraft und Frische von Freundlichs utopischer Kunst erleben.

He is one of the most original abstract artists of the twentieth century. The Museum Ludwig will present the oeuvre of the sculptor and painter Otto Freundlich (1878–1943) in a big retrospective.
"Otto Freundlich. Cosmic Communism" offers insights into the oeuvre of a man who steadfastly followed his own path. In mosaics and stained-glass windows he took up a collective art of the past and brought it into the future. While the elite of the art world paid their respects to him on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday in 1938, the Nazis denounced him in their exhibition of "degenerate art".
Many of his works were destroyed. The sculptures and mosaics as well as the luminescent paintings and pastels assembled in this exhibition are thus all the more impressive. Here visitors can experience the radiance and freshness of Freundlich's utopian art.
